Hostel Accommodation

The University of Jaffna provides residential facilities to help undergraduate students study in a safe, comfortable, and affordable environment. The hostel system is managed by the Student Welfare Branch in coordination with university academic and administrative staff.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

Due to limited capacity, accommodation cannot be granted to all students for their entire degree duration. The university uses a clear prioritization system:

  • Primary Eligibility: Accommodation is heavily prioritized for first-year students
  • Selection Factors: For other batches, rooms are allocated based on the family’s income level (lower-income groups are given preference) and the distance between the student’s permanent residence and the university.
  • Duration: Allocation is typically granted for a maximum of one academic year at a time, requiring students to reapply or vacate as per faculty schedules.

Administration and Management

To maintain discipline and support student well-being, each hostel operates under a structured management team:

  • Warden: A senior academic staff member appointed to provide supervision and guidance on major hostel matters.
  • Sub-Warden: A full-time, resident officer responsible for the complete execution of day-to-day operations, maintenance of discipline, and immediate student assistance.

Hostel Rules and General Facilities

Subsidized Rent: The hostel rent is heavily subsidized at Rs. 200.00 monthly (Rs. 2,400.00 annually).

Refundable Deposit: A refundable hostel deposit of Rs. 250.00 must be paid upon initial admission to the hostel.

Meals: Cooking inside the rooms is strictly prohibited. Subsidized meals are available through the hostel canteens, or nearby faculty cafeterias.
